DJ Mes: Flirting with Danger
THERE’S nothing like a circus juggling performance – awing at crazy individuals performing an extravagant balancing act whilst numerous people sit around focused on the act of bravery.
And it’s not normally balls and pins these days.
People are enticed by the concept of flirting with danger and on the odd occasion invite the knives, fire and absurd weapons out to play. Pretty much a day in the life of house heavyweight DJ Mes really.
Strange analogy? Perhaps. But trying to build a steady equilibrium between successful record label, house producer and touring DJ is a hard juggling act to follow and attracts the biggest danger most of all…failure.
“I always wanted to start my own label but when I started Guesthouse I had no idea that it would take off like it did,” Mes concedes.
“The response and support has been overwhelming and I’m just happy that people like our music and that we’re able to get the underground sound heard around the globe. With Guesthouse I’ve always tried to try focus on consistency, quality, and music aimed directly at the dance floor.”
“It’s important to me to support and showcase tried-and-true mainstay artists as well as the freshest up-and-coming talent and I think that’s one of the things that sets us apart from other labels.”
There’s an unusual code in the house scene. Either you are in it, or you’re not. The ever-present unison between producers and record label managers is strong and as Mes explains, it gives people the chance to wear a few different hats at the same time.
“When you’re a DJ, producer or label owner (sometimes all three) everyone ends up knowing one another just like any other small community and then friendships and relationships are forged.
“Of course, the wonders of the inter-web never cease.
“I have some artists signed to Guesthouse that I’ve never met but I talk to them everyday.
“Even before I started Guesthouse I had formed a close relationship with one of Australia’s best underground Dj/Producers, DJ Freestyle.”
“Through that relationship I ended up becoming friends with another one of Australia’s rising stars, Ricardo Rae. Between the three of us we have worked on multiple projects together and thought it all become great friends.
“Come to think of it I have a lot of Australian artists signed to Guesthouse and they sort of all stem from my original relationship with Freestyle.”
So not only is the label en route to domination, it’s bringing Australia with it. Reassuring nonetheless.
“I would be remiss if I didn’t quickly mention my good friends, The Sound Republic. They are one of Guesthouse biggest artist and a couple of my closest friends in the dance world.”
So how does one construct the dynamics to success in the house world?
“My passion lies with moving a crowd and working a dance floor. For me, there is no greater high then connecting with the dancers and being able to control the mood of the party.”
“It’s almost like conducting your own symphony of sorts.
It may be hard to understand if you have never rocked a party but that’s definitely what does it for me and keeps me going.”
“Producing, remixing and running a label all falls into that.
To be able to play a track you made and see people’s reactions on the dance floor is such awesome feeling.”
“When another Dj/Producer you look up to plays one of your tracks, you feel sky high! I see people gettin’ down to Guesthouse tunes and just knowing that I had a hand in bringing that music to those people is another amazing feeling…It really makes it all worth it.”
